The human semen composes of fluids come from all genital organs (testicles, epididymis, prostate and seminal vesicles) and from the ejaculatory ducts (including the urethra). These fluids mix at the ejaculation giving early support the spermatozoa, for starting the long journey until fertilization. In turn, these secretions contain a lot of substances that are pivotal for sperm metabolism after ejaculation, each with a biological function, although this is virtually unknown for the vast majority of chemical compounds discovered in semen. The highest prevalence of secretions in semen is of the seminal vesicles fluids (about 60-65% of the ejaculate), whereas the prostate fraction accounts for about 30-35%. The seminal vesicles produce nutrients for sperm metabolism, especially fructose and inorganic phosphorus.
